Toi Whakaari is excited to announce the launch of its newly NZQA accredited programme The Bachelor of Performing Arts, (BPA), with endorsements in Design, Production and Acting.
This unique and revitalised programme provides the same essential and high quality training that has always been offered by Toi Whakaari, replacing the following degree programmes, Bachelor of Performing Arts Management, Bachelor of Design (Stage and Screen) and Bachelor of Performing Arts Acting.
Our renowned performing arts training is now supported by a new ground-breaking learning model, designed to provide students with a range of skills and ways of working that are contemporary, relevant and aligned to the rapidly evolving landscape of creative and performing arts in Aotearoa and beyond.
This new programme builds on Toi Whakaari’s long standing tradition of seeking continual improvement to the training offered, and development has drawn on the expertise of staff and on valuable industry, student and graduate consultation.
Across a 50-year history, Toi Whakaari graduates have made a huge impact on the creative sector and they continue to find success across myriad of roles and pathways.
While the essential skills of each core discipline; acting, design and production, remain front and centre, the BPA also provides a refreshed learning structure and a wide range of practical experiences to grow skills and knowledge that are essential to build a successful trajectory in the performing and creative arts sector, leading to even more successful and varied outcomes for our graduates.
Content and practical experience includes:
World leading skills, knowledge and practical application in the area of specialisation
Weaving of Mātauranga Māori through curriculum
Wide range of live, screen, and digital practical experiences
Interdisciplinary and collaborative learning and practice opportunities
Opportunity to extend into skills that are not necessarily in core specialisation through breadth courses
Professional knowledge and practice
Industry placements
The First year of the Bachelor of Performing Arts (BPA) with endorsements in Design, Production and Acting will be offered in 2026 with subsequent years rolled out in years following.
The BPA programme draws on the commitment of Toi Whakaari to consistently employ processes and structures which can be recognised as uniquely of Aotearoa New Zealand, upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
