This is an emotionally, intellectually and physically demanding course and students need to bring a mature approach. Successful applicants must be 18 years of age by the first day of term.
Outline of the application and audition process:
- Submit an initial online Application Form
- (Applicants who are in NZ or Australia) Book your Audition Workshop
- Submit an online Applicant’s Supplementary Information Form (including your Personal Statement see below)
- Nominate two referees and ask them to complete and submit the online Reference Form
Each time you submit an online form you should receive an email confirmation from us. If you don’t, this means the form hasn’t submitted correctly, please contact us if you have any problems email@example.com.
The School auditions all applicants and there is no requirement to have had prior acting experience. There are no academic or physical requirements beyond a basic level of health and fitness, and a willingness to take on the work.
Your Personal Statement should answer the following questions:
- Why are you applying for this course?
- Describe two or three of your most significant achievements, explain why you believe they are significant, and what did you discover about yourself from these achievements?
- What qualities would you bring to Toi Whakaari?
- What are the challenges you think you would encounter as a student at Toi Whakaari?
- What do you hope to gain from your time at Toi Whakaari?
We encourage you to share some personal insights and influences that shaped you. You should aim for around 200–300 words, be succinct! You can type it in or send us the link to a video.

All applicants will attend a three hour audition workshop with two Toi Whakaari graduates. A Toi Whakaari tutor will also be present to observe the applicants. Two extracts of monologue material will be sent to applicants prior to the audition workshop which will also consist of games, improvisation and devising tasks, exploring text and performing text.
Audition workshops for applicants seeking admission to Toi Whakaari in 2017 will be held from Saturday the 3rd until Sunday the 18th of September. Our team will be auditioning in Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch, Ashburton and Sydney (30th July). Here are the Audition Workshop Scripts (NZ & Australia)
Once initial auditions are completed, short-listed applicants are invited to attend Applicants’ Weekend at the School in Wellington. This year Applicants’ Weekend will run from Friday 28th – Sunday 30th of October.
Applicants’ Weekend consists of further interviews, auditions and classes. From this group of recallees, the national audition panel selects the successful applicants and notifies all applicants of their decision by mail and email.
The course fees for 2016 are $6,654 (incl. GST). Fees for 2017 will be decided by October 2016. There is also a Student Services Levy of approximately $300 per year (subject to confirmation). Students need to buy a small amount of equipment, and some texts. It is also recommended that students allocate an additional $1,000 to $1,500 per annum for associated course costs.
Students should contact StudyLink as soon as possible prior to the beginning of the school year to start their loan application process.
Australian students pay Domestic Students Tuition Fees but must meet New Zealand government residency requirements in regard to eligibility for Student Loans. More information is available here.
Toi Whakaari welcomes applications from international students. International students are not eligible for any government support while studying at the school and have to pay international student fees. Acting applicants may submit a filmed audition (DVD or digital file). If applicants are selected, they must be available to participate in an on-line interview/audition around the time of Applicants’ Weekend in Wellington in late October each year.
