This is an emotionally, intellectually and physically demanding course and students need to bring a mature approach. Successful applicants must be 18 years of age by the first day of term.

Outline of the application and audition process:

Each time you submit an online form you should receive an email confirmation from us. If you don’t, this means the form hasn’t submitted correctly, please contact us if you have any problems apply@toiwhakaari.ac.nz.

The School auditions all applicants and there is no requirement to have had prior acting experience. There are no academic or physical requirements beyond a basic level of health and fitness, and a willingness to take on the work.

Your Personal Statement should answer the following questions:

  • Why are you applying for this course?
  • Describe two or three of your most significant achievements, explain why you believe they are significant, and what did you discover about yourself from these achievements?
  • What qualities would you bring to Toi Whakaari?
  • What are the challenges you think you would encounter as a student at Toi Whakaari?
  • What do you hope to gain from your time at Toi Whakaari?

We encourage you to share some personal insights and influences that shaped you. You should aim for around 200–300 words, be succinct! You can type it in or send us the link to a video.

Audition Information

All applicants will attend a three hour audition workshop with two Toi Whakaari graduates. A Toi Whakaari tutor will also be present to observe the applicants. The audition workshop will consist of games, improvisation and devising tasks, exploring text and performing text. The fee for the workshop is $85, see above for the link to book your place.

Audition workshops for applicants seeking admission to Toi Whakaari in 2018 will be held from Saturday the 2nd until Sunday the 17th of September. Our team will be auditioning in Auckland, Napier, Christchurch, Ashburton and Wellington. Here are the Audition Workshop Scripts

Once initial auditions are completed, short-listed applicants are invited to attend Applicants’ Weekend at the School in Wellington. This year Applicants’ Weekend will run from Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th of November.

Applicants’ Weekend consists of further interviews, auditions and classes. From this group of recallees, the national audition panel selects the successful applicants and notifies all applicants of their decision by mail and email.

Fees

The course fees for 2017 are $6,787 (incl. GST). Fees for 2018 will be decided by October 2017.  There is also a Student Services Levy of approximately $300 per year (subject to confirmation). Students need to buy a small amount of equipment, and some texts. It is also recommended that students allocate an additional $1,000 to $1,500 per annum for associated course costs.

Students should contact  StudyLink as soon as possible prior to the beginning of the school year to start their loan application process.

Australian students

Australian students pay Domestic Students Tuition Fees but must meet New Zealand government residency requirements in regard to eligibility for Student Loans. More information is available here.

International Students

Toi Whakaari welcomes applications from international students.  International students are not eligible for any government support while studying at the school and have to pay international student fees. For more information about being an international student, check out our International Students’ Page or email apply@toiwhakaari.ac.nz.  Acting applicants may submit a filmed audition (DVD or digital file). If applicants are selected, they must be available to participate in an on-line interview/audition around the time of Applicants’ Weekend in Wellington in late October each year.

Additional costs:

  • pastoral care fee of $250
  • student services levy of up to $600 dependent on the course of study
  • the student must also cover all personal insurance costs.
